We Just Launched a Community Q&A — Better Than Any Facebook Group
Facebook groups bury good answers in hours. We built a Q&A platform where the best answers stay on top, everything is searchable, and nothing disappears.
If you're an expat in Colombia, you probably belong to at least one Facebook group. Medellín Expats, Expats in Bogotá, Colombia Expat Community — there are dozens of them. And they all have the same problems: posts disappear in hours, the search is useless, the same questions get asked every week with no way to find past answers, and the moderation is either too heavy or nonexistent.
We built something better. Today we're launching the Colombia Move Community — a Q&A platform at colombiamove.com/comunidad where you can ask questions, share knowledge, and actually find answers that stick around.
Why We Built This
Here's what happened last week in a Medellín expat Facebook group: someone asked "Can I open Nequi without a cédula?" It got 47 comments. Half were wrong, a quarter were people arguing, and the actual correct answer was buried as comment #31. By the next day, the post was invisible — pushed down by new posts about restaurant recommendations and visa complaints.
Next week, someone will ask the same question. They'll get 40 new comments. The same wrong answers will appear. The cycle repeats forever.
This is broken. A good answer to "Can I open Nequi without a cédula?" shouldn't disappear. It should be findable, upvotable, and permanent. That's what we built.
How It Works
- Ask a question — Select a category (Visa, Housing, Daily Life, Work, Culture, or Travel), tag your city, and post. Takes 30 seconds.
- Community answers — Other expats and locals share what they know. The best answers get upvoted to the top.
- Accepted answers — The person who asked can mark the best answer with a green checkmark. Future visitors see the right answer first.
- Everything is searchable — Unlike Facebook, every question has its own permanent URL. Google indexes it. You can find it months later.
- Linked to your profile — Your questions and answers are tied to your Colombia Move profile. The same profile connected to your job listings, classifieds, and messaging. One identity across the whole platform.
Why This Is Better Than Facebook Groups
| Feature | Facebook Groups | Colombia Move Community |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Terrible | Category filters, city filters, full text search |
| Post lifespan | Gone in hours | Permanent, indexed by Google |
| Best answers | Buried in comments | Upvoted + accepted, shown first |
| Organization | Chronological mess | 6 categories, city tags, sort options |
| Privacy | Your full Facebook profile exposed | Platform profile only, control what's visible |
| Language | Whatever the group speaks | Bilingual UI, post in either language |
| Ads | Everywhere | Zero |
The Categories
- Visa & Legal — Immigration questions, cédula process, visa renewals, tax questions
- Housing — Finding apartments, neighborhood recommendations, landlord issues, utilities
- Daily Life — Banking, healthcare, groceries, internet, phone plans, getting things done
- Work & Money — Remote work, freelancing, starting a business, taxes, coworking
- Culture & Social — Making friends, learning Spanish, dating, cultural differences
- Travel — Domestic trips, day trips, safety tips, transportation

Part of Something Bigger
The Community Q&A isn't a standalone project — it's the latest piece of a platform we've been building to cover everything you need to thrive in Colombia, whether you're a local Colombian or an expat:
- Blog — 100+ detailed guides on visas, cost of living, neighborhoods, healthcare, banking, safety, and more
- Job Board — Free bilingual job listings at colombiamove.com
- Classifieds — Free marketplace at colombiamove.com for housing, electronics, vehicles, and furniture
- Messaging — Built-in chat system so you never have to share your WhatsApp with strangers
- Community Q&A — The new launch. Permanent, searchable, community-driven answers (you're reading about it now)
Everything is bilingual. Everything is free. Everything works together — your profile, your listings, your messages, and now your community contributions are all connected under one account.
We're Building Fast — And We Need Your Help
We launched the job board 2 weeks ago. Classifieds a few days later. The messaging system this week. Now the Community Q&A. We're shipping features at a pace that would make most startups jealous, and we're doing it because this community needs these tools right now, not in 6 months.
But a community platform is only as good as the community using it. Here's how you can help:
- Ask your first question — That thing you've been wondering about Colombia but haven't Googled yet? Post it.
- Answer someone else's question — You've been here longer. You know things. Share them.
- Share the link — Next time someone asks a question in a Facebook group, link them to the Community. One person at a time is how platforms grow.
- Give us feedback — Missing a category? Want a feature? Something broken? Tell us through our contact form. We read every single message and we build based on what you tell us.
What's Coming Next
This is Phase 1. We started with Q&A because it solves the most immediate problem — finding reliable answers. Here's what we're building toward:
- Full discussion threads for open-ended conversations
- Expert badges for consistently helpful contributors
- City-specific community sections
- Integration with our blog content (answers link to relevant guides)
- Mobile app notifications for answers to your questions
The pace depends on you. The more people use it, the more we invest in it. We're building this for the community, with the community.

❓ Do I need an account to ask or answer questions?
Yes, but creating an account takes 10 seconds — just enter your email and click the magic link. Same account works for the job board, classifieds, messaging, and community. If you've already posted a listing or signed in before, you're already set.
❓ Can I post in English or Spanish?
Either. The UI is bilingual but questions and answers are in whatever language you write. Most conversations are in English since the community is largely English-speaking expats, but Spanish questions are welcome and encouraged.
❓ How is spam/abuse handled?
Rate limiting prevents mass posting (5 questions/day, 20 answers/day). Users can report inappropriate content with the flag button. Admins can delete any content. The upvoting system naturally surfaces quality and buries noise.
❓ Is this replacing the blog?
No. The blog has in-depth, researched guides. The Community is for specific questions, personal experiences, and real-time advice. They complement each other — blog posts often link to relevant community questions, and community answers often reference blog guides.
❓ What if I want a category that doesn't exist?
Tell us through the contact form. We actively add categories based on community demand. If enough people want a "Pets" or "Food & Restaurants" category, we'll add it.
